As parents, we all want what’s best for our children. We want them to be happy, healthy, and full of life. But for some families, the path to a healthy life is paved with unexpected challenges. One local mom, Kennidi, knows this all too well. Her daughter, Oakley, a feisty second-grader with a love for dance and cheer, was born with a complex congenital heart condition.
Oakley’s journey began early. She had her first heart surgery at just six weeks old. At two years old, she underwent a temporary repair procedure called the GLEN procedure. But it was at age six, during a planned FONTAN surgery, a complex procedure to further repair her heart, that doctors discovered she would need a heart transplant.
The news was devastating. After being listed for a heart transplant in January 2024, Oakley began a long, nine-month wait. In November 2024, the family was transferred to Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. Dr. Spinner and the TCH team quickly evaluated Oakley, and within two weeks, she was officially placed on the transplant list at Texas Children’s.
The waiting continued but 1 year after originally being placed on the transplant list came a day the family will never forget.
A match was found!
The following day, after a 12-hour surgery, Oakley had a new heart. Kennidi recalls the immediate and dramatic change. She told us, “Immediately her color is so much better.” Although the first night was tough, Oakley’s recovery was nothing short of miraculous. By day two, she was walking, and by day four, she was riding a bike. After just three weeks of recovery, the family left TCH together, celebrating with a traditional bubble parade.
Oakley’s journey is a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the life-changing impact of medical professionals. It’s also a testament to the fact that world-class pediatric care is now more accessible than ever for families right here in Austin.
