Shaping Hays County: Questions to Ask Your Commissioner Candidates - Hill Country Moms

What would be your #1 priority if elected?

Selecting a single priority is quite challenging; however, with 60% of the county budget allocated to law enforcement and the criminal justice system, I believe this area is crucial. I had the opportunity to attend the Sheriff’s Office Citizens Academy, where I gained insights into our county’s law enforcement operations. This experience helped me identify areas needing improvement and understand how to allocate funds effectively to enhance their job performance. From the perspective of a county commissioner, public safety is of utmost importance, and collaborating closely is essential to keep Hays safe. I also had the privilege of meeting with local law enforcement associations and officials in Precinct 3, which led to securing endorsements from nearly all law enforcement groups and officials in the area. This includes the Hays County Law Enforcement Association, the San Marcos Police Officers Association, Hays County Sheriff Gary Cutler, Constable of Precinct 3 Don Montague, and Constable of Precinct 1 David Peterson.

Why is this position important to you?
This role holds great significance for me as a mother who prioritizes the safety of our county and precinct. I am committed to providing my daughter with a secure environment in which to grow up. Ensuring that public safety is a key focus for the commissioner in Precinct 3 is essential, and if I am chosen for this position, I will dedicate myself to making Hays a safe community.I also want to ensure that my family and community have access to clean drinking water while we work to safeguard the invaluable natural resources within our precinct and county.

What specific plans do you have to promote sustainable growth in our county while preserving our natural resources and rural character?
Precinct 3 in Hays has effective subdivision rules and regulations that address the unique aspects of our county and its environmental challenges. We will continue to enhance the county’s conservation program while supporting our local groundwater districts. It is essential to advocate for the community by communicating to potential developers the expectations and priorities that matter most to residents and their quality of life. It is crucial to safeguard our natural resources from unchecked development and to engage with the community to ensure their voices are acknowledged.
